Cupcake decorating with the kids...

We all know it can be hard keeping the kids entertained at the weekend, especially when the weather is so cold and miserable! So today I decided to do a little cupcake decorating with the kids and took some photographs of our lovely afternoon together.

Flower Pearl cupcakes

I wanted to create a selection of tea time cupcakes in traditional buttercream that looked as attractive as they tasted. So I began by baking some chocolate cupcakes and making a batch of vanilla buttercream. I then added touches of pinks and lilacs and ended up creating different flowers using various piping nozzles. To finish, I added touches of pearlised fondant accents. They turned out pretty fab, even if I must say so myself....

Freshly picked cupcakes

These cupcakes were made today and took me six hours to complete from start to finish. A labour of love! They are chocolate cupcakes with milk chocolate Oreo frosting and fondant toppers.

I really enjoyed making these because in nature, nothing is perfectly symmetrical or the same, so there's a lot more room for creativity. I possibly got a little carried away with the details (is there such a thing with cake decorating I wonder?)

Here's how they eventually turned out....

Louis Vuitton handbag cake

Here is a Louis Vuitton handbag cake that I made for a customer of mine. It is a large twelve inch wide cake made from chocolate mud cake, layered with Belgian chocolate ganache filling. The cake is all edible and covered in fondant with edible LV print. It was quite a challange getting the handles to stay put, but I managed it in the end.
Here is the final result...

Mosque cake

This is a two tier novelty mosque cake made on the occasion of Eid. It was a challenge to come up with a balance of bright colours and simplicity for this design as it was meant for a children's Eid party.

The cake is made from chocolate sponge with a dark chocolate ganache filling and white chocolate ganache and fondant covering. It has a royal icing finish and fondant accents.

The message reads 'Eid mubarak' (Happy Eid)

All four minarets are edible and made from cake.

Chess cupcakes

Today I baked some novelty cupcakes on order for a birthday boy. The combination of vanilla versus chocolate went perfectly with the chess theme as well as providing a variety of flavours for the consumers.

On the dark side are soft muffin-like cupcakes topped with fluffy chocolate fudge buttercream and chocolate buttons, whilst on the light side we have a selection of fondant topped white cupcakes with a light and airy vanilla buttercream frosting.

Chocolate versus vanilla: which would you choose?
